The House of Kendal is initiating the efforts to rejuvenate what remains of the industry: addressing fair returns to pickers, encouraging owners to care for plantations, educating stakeholders on importance of quality, organic farming and setting up a sustainable supply chain.
Coffee processing is a labour intensive undertaking. We give reasonable income to pickers to make it attractive to pick coffee.
In a day a picker can collect about 60 to 100 kilos. To make it worthwhile pickers have to be paid at least or RM1 a kilo. Now many farmers only pay 50 sen a kilo. Go figure.
